Heat-to-Fuel

In April, the Horizon 2020 project Heat-to-Fuel (HtF) was concluded. As part of the international consortium comprising of 14 partners, BEST’s main focus was to experimentally investigate and demonstrate part of the HtF process chain. One of the main achievements was the successful upscaling of the novel aqueous phase reforming (APR) process from bench to lab scale. This process is capable of producing a hydrogen-rich product gas from carbon-laden residual waters, which are often a by-product of biorefinery processes. Also, a newly developed millistructured reactor and an innovative catalyst, which were designed to maximize diesel yield, were tested in the Fischer-Tropsch (FT) process. Finally, the coupling of the APR and FT processes was demonstrated, as envisaged in the HtF process chain to produce synthetic fuels from the hydrogen obtained from residual waters. In total, more than 600 operating hours of experience were gained in the course of the project.
