Up2ndUse - Upgrading of waste to secondary raw materials and fuels

The overall objective is the upgrading of forest residues, residues of the wood processing industry and biogenic wastes into secondary raw materials and fuels for material and energetic utilization. In coordination with the project partners following biomasses have been selected for further investigation: forest residues, post-consumer and demolition wood, fine fraction from the mechanical-biological waste treatment (residual waste splitting), municipal sewage sludge, tree cutting and green waste, biodegradable waste. For these selected commodities available potentials have been investigated and stakeholder interviews, which should help to identify incentives and barriers for the supply, are ongoing.

Furthermore, the processing steps of forest residues, post-consumer and demolition wood, fine fraction from the mechanical-biological waste treatment (residual waste splitting) as well as municipal sewage sludge are analysed in more detail.

For the fine fraction and the sludge pyrolysis conversion was tested in special pilot facilities. Samples of post-consumer and demolition wood have been characterized. Field tests of shredding and sensor-based sorting of post-consumer and demolition wood have been conducted. Furthermore, samples of forest residues were sieved separating the oversize and undersize grain of the forest residues. Following, the undersize grain of the forest residues was briquetted. The chemical and physical properties of the sieve fractions and the briquettes were analyzed.
