Workshops on biofuel GHG calculations

The BioGrace calculation tool closes a gap in building up EU sustainability schemes for biofuels. Great interest of stakeholders

The BioGrace GHG Excel tool enables users to calculate actual values of biofuel GHG emissions according to the methodology laid out in the Renewable Energy Directive. So far public sustainability schemes that have been elaborated to verify compliance with the EU sustainability criteria do not contain such detailed calculation rules. The BioGrace project is thus seeking to harmonise biofuel GHG calculation in Europe.

On February 16th, 2011, some 50 stakeholders from the biofuel field from Austria, Finland, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia attended the public BioGrace workshop in Vienna. The participants were biofuel producers and suppliers, public officers, GHG experts, auditors, and advisors. They learned about

  • the sustainability criteria for biofuels of the Renewable Energy Directive,
  • implementation of the directive in different EU member states,
  • ongoing European und international standardisation and harmonisation processes (CEN, ISO),
  • the BioGrace GHG emission calculation tools.

The workshop was concluded with a practical calculation session where the Excel tool was applied to calculate three real biofuel production pathways.

The workshop in Vienna was the first in a series of seven across Europe from March until June that will be organised by the BioGrace project partners. All workshops are free of charge.
